Night Session

Wish I was sitting here right now, on a sunny day...rather than at my computer, still at work at 9:31 pm.
It's been a very long day (13 1/2 and counting). Getting tired and though we all know that they aren't going to finish their work tonight, they persist!
Praying for 10:00 pm to be "going home" time!

4 vs. 1

Holy crud - busy busy busy, let me tell you!

Yesterday was officially day one of my new job (technically its day 5 as I moved to the new office last Tuesday and Thursday and Friday were considered a holiday), and I’m already wiped out. Before, I worked for one person; one easy going, super, never demanding woman. In my new job, it’s 4 men; 4 completely different men with 4 completely different view points, 4 completely different areas of interest and 4 completely different writing styles/voices.

OH. MY. GOD! I feel like I'm being pulled in so many different directions that my head is spinning. I thought I knew what I was getting myself into with this job. I mean, come on - how hard could it be? Wasn't I already a legislative aide?

TOTALLY. NOT. THE. SAME. JOB!

Hindsight being 20/20 and all, I've come to realize just how much I took my old job for granted; how many others were there supporting me and I, them. Now it's all on me, times 4. And all I can say is, "gulp."

I know it will get better, it always does.

But for the moment, it's just crazy and when I go home at night, I can't even think about a computer, let alone get on it to read blogs or write in my own. So I may be running a little silent here again, at least until I get into the swing of things and learn how to organize my time properly so I'm not exhausted when I get home at night.
(though hopefully soon I will be able to post pictures of the holiday decorating that's been happening at my house, and of the quilt I've been working on...soon, very soon!)

Doing the Snoopy Dance of Joy

Can you guess why?

I GOT THE JOB!

The job that I interviewed for last week; the one that will allow me to slide into the other office seamlessly...yeah, that one!

You want to talk about breathing a sigh of relief...it's like I've been holding my breath underwater, but I've finally broken the surface, and I can take great big gulps of air, because I'm safe again. Safe for another two years. Okay, so I guess that bout of calmness that I felt was covering my fear (and might I say it did a very good job in doing so, because I didn't lose a single night's sleep).

Out of the 30 applicants and the 20 people that they interviewed, they chose me based on my knowledge and experience.

I'm so relieved - I'm no longer in limbo; I can start planning again, start really shopping for Christmas, pay off my truck without worry. I feel like I could run a marathon right now, I feel so good!

Quiet Friday Joy

"How much of human life is lost in waiting" ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Waiting seems to be the buzz word around here. How do you pass the time when you're so anxious to hear news, any news, good or bad...just to stop the waiting...and the worrying...and the wondering.

(the photo is from 2 years ago. I've been in a snow mood the last few days...to which many other Mainers are saying "Bite your tongue!" - I can't help it, I love snow!)

Still Waiting

I know that patience is a virtue, but there is nothing worse than waiting when your job is on the line.

It's pretty much guaranteed that my current job (with my semi-private office, wide windowsill for my plants, couch, TV and lots of space) is going to someone else – it’s anyone’s guess when my last day in this office is, though, because no one can talk about it…technically things are still in transition and will be until December 3rd, when it’s all finalized.

I’ve come to terms with this, the knowing that my current job in this office is over. And really, I can’t complain; I’ve had a good 3 year run in this office, with great co-workers that I count as friends. I don’t feel scared…I’m still fairly calm. I know I will find something, but the waiting is the worst

I did have an interview with the office where the person who is taking my job is from…an interview for his job. Apparently, I ROCKED IT OUT! I went in there and knew what I was talking about when it came to a constituent services database, clearly stated how my current position fits well with their office (since it’s essentially the same job, only my tasks here varied more) and caught some smiles as they reviewed my résumé! I’m keeping my fingers crossed, because he and I could switch jobs seamlessly, transitioning us from one office over to another, no fuss no muss.

Yesterday, I was told by the President-elect that she had heard good things about my interview and then I was stopped on the stairs by someone who was a part of the trio that interviewed me. He said that I did awesome in my interview! I have a good feeling about this job, but I’m not taking anything for granted and have covered my bases by sending my résumé to a few other offices.

The only thing that sucks is that I won’t find out about this job until the end of this week/beginning of next week and yes, I know it’s not that long, but I’ve been in limbo since the election, not knowing if I should be scrimping and saving (since I don’t know if I’ve got a job to go to after this month)…and I’d like to get a start on Christmas! Normally, by now, I’ve almost finished my Christmas shopping…this year, I’ve barely begun! I have a grand total of 5 gifts (three of which are fillers) and 11 people on my list. I do have a list of all the things that I want to pick up for each person, but until I find out that I have a job, I really can’t shop. And much as I love Christmas, I hate actually having to go to stores during the Christmas season, because most people become rude and stupid…I say blessed be to internet shopping! Unfortunately, grocery shopping via the internet really isn’t an option ‘round here and I need to start stockpiling baking supplies, if I want to make the tons of goodies that I keep eyeing in different magazines and books!

Okay, I’ve blathered randomly for long enough…must get to work!

Releasing the fear and uncertainty, because in the end, it will all work out...

or so I keep telling myself.

The only bad thing about working in the political arena is that every two years, there is the potential for a complete and major shake up. I survived the last one (happening only a year after I came to work in my current office) because my boss wasn't termed out as a Senator. This year, she is. And now that new Leadership has been elected, the questions begin, the rumors fly and fear and uncertainty set in.

Last week, I had so many people say, "Oh don't worry. They'd be crazy not to keep you on in this office" (refering to new leadership). By Friday, I became increasingly aware that my position in this office was going to go to someone else. For the entire weekend, I slept horribly; everytime I thought about not having a job, I felt sick and on Monday, I spent the day with a boulder of terror in the pit of my stomach.

Tuesday, thankfully, was a day off (Veteran's Day) and a strange sensation of calm started settling in. It was a weird feeling, but at the same time, a very welcome feeling. For a while, my mantra had been "My job is secure, my job is secure, my job is secure"...intent upon staying in this office. But now, new possibilities are presenting themselves and the dawning realization of just how many people are looking out for my well being as I hear "I put in a good word for you with this person," "I overheard so and so telling that person what a great job you did in this office and how they should seriously consider you." So far I've heard that several people have given the right people glowing reviews of my work...you can't imagine the appreciation I feel having these people in my life, for going to the links that they're going to to make sure that I have a place here when the new Legislative session begins.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Change is gonna come...

It's done! It's over! We have a Democratic President, a Democratic Majority in Congress and a Democratic majority in the Maine State House! Whoo-hoo!!! Time for the Snoopy Dance of Joy!!
Okay, I'm tired now...wake me when it's time to swear in the new Senators.

Yesterday Wrap Up and More on the Room Box

Everyone in my family is doing the dance of joy for me! I went out to my friends' house after work and we all had celebratory tacos. If anyone knows how to make you feel celebrated, it’s my friends! I swear they get more excited for you than you yourself are. :^)

But yesterday really was a red letter day! I had a smile on my face till I went to bed. I mean I got my step increase, the new job within my office that I wanted, I ordered cable (the very basic – I’m having issues with my rotary antenna and now I will have a clear picture on all stations. WHOO HOO!), my truck will be getting an oil change and a front end alignment next Tuesday and by the end of the month, I’ll have more than enough money to buy 4 new tires for my truck, which will make it pass inspection! I know, those sound like minor things, but when they weigh on you like a lead brick because you’re worried your vehicle won’t make it through a Maine winter – it’s a major thing. I feel like I can breathe now!

I also wanted to share picts of the “test” room box that I made, the completed cutting table set up and the finished magazine spinner:

This was made from fairly thick MDF that I had out in the garage. I want to increase the length and depth of my room boxes, so I think I'll have to head to the Big Orange Box (Home Depot) for some 1/4" MDF or plywood to make the real boxes. I haven't decided if I'll paint the inside or "wallpaper" with some scrapbooking paper, yet. I'll get a square of peel and stick linoleum for the flooring.

(Click on the pictures to make them bigger. I can't put them on Flickr yet, because my mother and aunt both look at my photos on that site - they don't read this, so I can share)

I was hoping to make these roomboxes up this weekend, but Mum and Dad are coming up to help me sheet rock. Guess they'll have to wait until Monday!

CRAZY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

Okay, here's the backstory...back in June, the Legislative Aide in my office let slip that he was looking for a new job. He's very campaign oriented and off session here is very, very quiet. You basically twiddle your thumbs and have to look for projects to keep you busy til January. So to hear this really didn't surprise me. My first thought was, "I want that job!" It's a higher pay grade and more responsibilities, but essentially I've been doing Legislative Aide work all along.

Well, the Legislative Aide went for several different interviews (and believe me, I was sending positive thoughts and luck with him to every one), but after two months, he was still looking...until about August, when he announced that he would be working on a Congressional campaign starting in January. I was rejoicing! Not that I don't like the guy, but because I wanted his job.

Just before we all headed to our staff retreat, I made my intentions known to my boss (Beth) and she seemed very happy that I wanted that job. She had a conversation with my Chief of Staff (that I happened to overhear) and it did not reassure me - even though I was only getting one side of the conversation, I gathered that he had other candidates in mind. But I let it go, thinking that if it was meant to be mine...it would be!

Anyhoo, two weeks ago my Chief said "I know you've expressed an interest in the job. And I not saying that we're giving it to you...but I'm not saying that we're not. I want you to be thinking of other ways that you can be of assistance to our members to get your face out there more, because after the next election, Beth is termed out and if Libby takes over this office, I'm gone too. We need to make sure that the rest of the members see you as an asset, so you can slide into any role that may come available and to keep you in a job." (that's the crappy thing about working here, it's all dependent upon elections, who has control of the Senate and whether or not you are an invaluable asset!)

So, today we had staff reviews with my boss and my Chief. They both said they're very pleased with my work and....

WOULD I ACCEPT THE POSITION OF LEGISLATIVE AIDE FOR THE COMING SESSION!!!!!!!

Seriously, I'm doing the happy happy dance of joy right now! Not only did I get offered the job I wanted, but my step increase went into effect today! Money's been a little tight lately (like a dress 6 sizes too small), so this has just been the best day!

Anyhoo, gotta go spread my good news to the rest of my family and friends!

Happy Wednesday!

Tales from Ambajejus Lake

Our staff retreat was…interesting; enjoyable, but weather ridden and sleep deprived. The camp was 2½ hours from the office. I, suffering from a rather sleepless night (only 4 hours under my belt), rode up with Deb and forgot to take some Dramamine (and I should know better being the horribly carsick type – but it wasn’t so bad, just mildly icky feeling). The road to the camp (I wish I had taken pictures) was a loooooong and winding dirt road that crossed over a well traveled, paved, logging road, then continued on for another loooooong time. It was practically a one lane road that everyone seemed to fly down at breakneck speed. But once we reached the camp, that road was worth the travel!
The view of Mt. Katahdin was phenomenal from the deck of Marcia’s camp!
We sat; we enjoyed the scenery; we had a mini-staff meeting while sitting in camp chairs around the fire pit; we played games (Scrabble got pretty brutal!)
We celebrated Deb’s 50th!
We ate; we drank; we swam; my chief of staff attempted to teach my boss how to fly fish.
Marcia hit a duck with a rock – not intentionally! It was quacking like mad and she was trying to shoo it away (since they come in and poo on her beach), so she started throwing little rocks into the water to scare it off, only her aim was better than she thought and she hit it. Poor duck! It flew off. Marcia was mortified! She felt so bad. Thursday night, rather early early Friday morning (2:00-ish), the wind came up so strong that I had to abandon the tent for the living room couch. I had put a tarp over the tent because it had rained a little earlier and with the wind, it sounded like I was sleeping in a potato chip bag that someone was viciously crinkling! It was horrible! And after about 4 hours sleep, I awoke at 6:00 – wide awake! 48 hours with 8 hours sleep, does not a coherent Tiffany make. But Friday was beautiful! The sun shone bright and the sky was virtually cloud-free all day. Then, just after dinner, I looked down the lake to see the most ferocious black clouds creeping across the sky, so I put the tarp (crinkly potato chip bag) back on the tent. Within an hour, the lightning started, then the camp-shaking thunder rumbled and rain began pelting down. When I looked outside, the trees were beginning to blow almost sideways! I looked over at my tent to see my tarp flying, attached only by one mere string! Then the tent itself began to lift off the ground, pins pulled from the dirt. Roger, Deb and I ran out into the pouring rain to grab all of my stuff from the tent before it got totally soaked and take down the tent, as well, before it blew off down the lake!
Talk about the craziest of weather. It was like a mini-hurricane! Everything was so soaked Saturday morning that I threw it all into trash bags and left it till I got home. What a mess! And so ends my adventures at Ambajejus Lake.

I ♥ the art of Lindy Longhurst

I happened upon Lindy Longhurst when I went searching Etsy for mermaids. She is an artist from the Blue Mountains west of Sydney, Australia.

I kept coming back to her work and I ended up buying this, this and this. The colors, the designs - there's just so much to look at within her work. I keep finding something new in every piece, even though I've looked at it a dozen times. Bear with the links, they take a bit to load up...or maybe it's just my internet is slow today.

I'm off like a dirty shirt for the next few days. My office is having a staff retreat at Marcia's camp. We're heading way the heck up to Millinocket (about 2 1/2 hours from where we work) to Ambajejus (pronounced am-bah-gee-jus) Lake. I've never been, but this is what it looks like. I'll take lots of picts. It's just 2 days, then it's off to the Lake (to my folks) to pick up dear Sadie, who has been hanging out with them all week. On one hand, it's been nice not having to get up at 5:00 every morning to take her for a walk, but on the other...I miss her. I keep thinking I hear her collar jingle *sigh*.

Have a fabulous rest of the week and weekend. I'll catch up with you all on Monday!

Finally...

We adjourned at 10:32 last night and if I hadn't been so tired, I would have done the happy happy dance of joy! I'm still exhausted - at the end of today, this will have been a 60 hour work week. :^(

I don't like 60 hour work weeks. They remind me of when my soul was owned by a retail conglomerate and 17 hour days happened EVERYDAY!

But yesterday I did seek some respite in a lovely, sunny little spot
A place to put my feet up soak up a little sun
watch the summer sky roll about
And rest my tired eyes

It's back to work today, but now to blissful quiet. Silent halls that, not 12 hours ago, were packed with people: Senators, Representatives, lobbyists, citizens, staffers, reporters, camera crews.

Today, they will go back to their normal daily lives.

And so will I. Here. In the quiet.

1 AM

We were in session until 12:45 this morning. We're still not finished.
I'm working on 4 1/2 hours of sleep,
and I took these photos on my ride home from work.
I hope we finish everything today because by 2 PM, I'll either be giddy and silly...
or asleep.

I need a vacation

I've said it before, but I really enjoy my job. I work in the Maine Legislature (Office of the Senate President), but we're not a full-time legislature, which means every two years, we have a new legislative session and every two years there is the possibility of not having a job (a bit nerve-wracking). Our legislative session is broken up into 2 individual (regular) sessions. The first session is the longest running (normally) from January to June. Our second session runs from January to April (sometimes May). In my office, session normally starts off busy, slows down a little as committees settle into their work on bills and then speeds up like a freight train when the end of session approaches. Paperwork comes in furious piles. Tempers flare and suspicion abounds at the slightest notion of someone's bill going the wrong way. Lobbyists hover, staff members scurry and the media camps outside each chamber in hopes of a scoop. Rumors circulate and questions are asked: Will tax reform go this way or that? Will the State health plan make it or be scrapped? Will a certain Senator have a meltdown in public...again...or just in the privacy of her caucus...again? Ooooooh, the drama!

The biggest question today is about adjournment. Today is the day when they should finish their work. Will they? Many have been asking this. Everyone has a guess...a date and a time (and $5 in a pool - keep your fingers crossed for tomorrow night at 11:12 pm).

There is an air of anticipation here today. A calm before the storm. How will it all end? When will it all end?

And my question...when can I take a vacation?

Scenes from the State House

These are things that I see everyday that I take for granted, until I see a group of young students wander these halls, wide eyed, in awe and wonder. I get so caught up with the hussle and bussle and chaos that I forget to look around me...really see the history...think of those who walked this floor before me.

Doin' the Happy Happy Dance of Joy

Well, it might be a premature "Happy Happy Dance of Joy", since the final vote hasn't been made but I'm doing it anyway!!

I STILL HAVE A JOB (at least that's the concensus)!!!

Yippee!!

Leadership was chosen and my boss is still President...well Democratic Presidental Nominee to be exact. On December 6th, the whole Senate will vote...but the D's have the majority and so long as all the little duckies stay in their row, my job will be secure for the next 2 years. This session we will also have a wicked, kick-ass Majority Leader - she is so incredible smart and sweet and, as she puts it, "Tenacious as all get out!" She's just one of those people that you really enjoy working with because she appreciates everything you do (you don't mind going out of your way to do things for her!).

And another happy "work" note, this is a 2 day work week for me! Ingenious girl that I am, I took Wednesday off to help my mother prepare for Thanksgiving (and with my job, Friday's part of the holiday. WHOO HOO!)

Oh...and you know how I was complaining about the weird weather? We're back to normal November temps. It was 32 when I walked the dog this morning and I loved every minute of it. In a month, when it's 32 with a wind chill factor of -20...I'll be complaining again. That's just how I am, I've come to accept it! Now I want snow. I love snow up until February, then I want spring! In my perfect world, spring would start at the beginning of March, summer at the end of May, Fall - September 1st and Winter - the week of Thanksgiving! And for the week before Christmas, it would snow every day...not a lot, just enough to make it pretty and clean and white! That would be the weather forecast in my perfect world (I love those Walgreen commercials where they show the town of Perfect. Have you seen those? You can see one here and here, for those who don't have Walgreens Pharmacies or their commercials. They're described as Tim Burton-esque and I find that very befitting!

Well enough randomness for one day. Until tomorrow, happiness abounds my friends, happiness all around!

oh what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day

i forget how comforting the daily routine is. this week has been a sketchy, hectic, crazy week at work and every morning, i was dragging myself out of bed, exhausted and reluctant to take that morning trudge, i mean walk, with the dog. i skipped a lot of breakfasts because i was just too tired to make any and the morning shower was not invigorating, it was work that made me just want to go back to bed. the drives to work were fraught with construction and made me late most mornings.

today is friday and the sun was practically shining at 5 am and when my stereo came on, it was playing good music, enough to wake me gently and set me into a relaxed, calm mood. the morning walk was quiet, with warm sun and a very well behaved sadie! breakfast...oh, breakfast was leisurely and splendid. i roast my own coffee, so it brewed up a heavenly scent as i made a two egg and cheese omelet with eggs from melissa's chickens.

I don't often photograph my food, but couldn't resist. this was by far and away, the best cheese omelet i've ever made. oh how yummy! fresh eggs are infinitely better than store bought eggs. the size, the rich gold of the yolk; they make store boughts seem puny and inferior. i'm reluctant to ever buy store bought again. i think i need to start buying fresh eggs every week!

to continue my tale, the shower was perfect, i put on jeans to wear to work because its friday and no one will care. i left the house on time and the great gods of construction were working with me this morning rather than against me, as they really hadn't started working on the roads yet. i sailed through and to work with enough time to go get a smoothie. then!! then, since my boss isn't here today, i got to park in her spot right close to the building and 4 people are off today, while 3 are coming in much later! it is truly quiet and peaceful in here, giving me the opportunity to write this. today will be one of those rare "gimme" days, a freebie where no one really expects you to work and if you do, they're amazed! i love days like this...it's a guilt free, wearing jeans to the office, slacker day!

well, i do have to work a little. make some scheduling phone calls, set up a meeting, do a memo regarding some study appointments, call my ever so wonderful boss (no i'm not being sarcastic, she's really great!!)...simple things that. maybe today will be a "leave at 4 and get a jump start on the holiday weekend" day! one can hope!

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

oh so NOT with it!

sleepy. oh so very sleepy. i didn't get out of work until 11:30 - a 15 & 1/2 hour day. yuck. i'm back at work now, working on 5 & 1/2 hours of sleep and we're preparing for another 15, 16, 17 or more hour day! This long holiday weekend cannot come too soon.

So i've been thinking of all the things that i want to do this summer and being the queen of lists, i've started a mental list (much like the mind maps). This is what I've got thus far:
  • bake more - especially bread and cookies and strawberry rhubarb pie
  • rip down the wall in mum and dad's old bedroom, then insulate, sheet rock and paint it pale pale sage (there is going to be a lot of green in my house!)
  • paint the upstairs hallway and mural the downstairs hall
  • clean out the ugly, rednecky backyard and make it pretty!
  • put up fencing so my little doggie doo can play in her backyard without running freely about the neighborhood!
  • create a garden, outdoor sanctuary in the backyard, complete with fire pit and tiki torches
  • get dear brother derek to make metal fire pit
  • swim at the lake as much as possible
  • go for more road trips and explore portions of maine that, despite living here forever, i have yet to visit
  • learn to make clothes
  • dye my own fabric
  • clean off the porch and return it to the sacred space it once was

oh how i miss lounging on my screen porch on the futon, the gentle summer breeze blowing through, reading a book, drinking ice tea. it was pure relaxation. now the porch is home to a whole bunch of stuff packed in boxes. the futon mattress is at the lake and even then alex wants to trade me his bunk beds for it. he's 14 now and, like me at that age, has a penchant for changing, rearranging and switching out furniture in his bedroom. he likes the idea of being able to turn the futon into a couch. and being the loving aunt that i am, i told him okay, besides once the bed is out of mum & dad's old room, i was moving the futon up there anyway...and i was really dreading that! he hasn't mention it to his dad yet, though. we'll have to see (my sister's cool with it, it's just the hubby we have to run it past).

i think the porch is this weekend's project (nothing like getting a head start on the summer list). i'm craving my porch space and cringe every time i look at it. piled high with boxes, remnants of potting season and the futon frame. it's not a big porch but i really would like to be able to sit at my little table on warm mornings and eat my breakfast or cool evenings with my dinner. since the futon will be going, i also have an old papsan chair (from the late days of high school) that i can stick out there. tallulah will be pleased, it was her favorite chair in my old apartment when she was a kitten. somewhere i have picts of her as a baby. she's 7 now (or will be in july). i bet once it's set up, sadie will claim it (if she can get into it). she and tal will fight over it. they are much like little kids! tally has a catseat attached to a window in the living room and sadie sits on the back of the couch and looks out another window in the living room, but lately tal's been sitting in sadie's spot and i think it's on purpose! sadie gets so mad - she whines and barks at the cat and looks at me like, "mumma, she's sitting in my seat! do something!!!" eventually she gets up on the couch, the cat (who is 30 lbs lighter than the dog) hisses and swats and does her version of running away (which is waddling as fast as her fat butt can waddle).

  • oh, make more smoothies!
  • learn to make fruit leather in the dehydrator
  • read...lots! catch up on guilty pleasures robert b. parkers and jim butchers and charlaine harris and maryjanice davidson (it's kind of funny, for all the "literature" i read at university, i am all for the paperback sci-fi, fantasy and detective novels - they are total escapism for me. and though i love hemingway, his simple depiction of extraordinary lives in places i've never been...his characters just don't hold my attention like spencer & hawk, harry dresden or anita blake!)
  • take sadie swimming at tyler pond more often

if i think of more things (which i will), i'll be sure to list them!
